Lots of people changed the way they ate during the lockdown and embraced a more plant-based diet,
with a significant reduction of food waste being reported. So I thought I would share with you one of
my favourite plant-based recipes and some must-have tips and hints for following a vegan lifestyle.
* Plant-based yoghurt
* Selection of red-fruits (strawberries, raspberries)
* Peach slices
* Granola
* Chia seeds
* Agave syrup / Coconut syrup
* Selection of toasted nuts
1) Start by placing all the fruit and several large scoops of yoghurt into a blender to make a thick smoothie base. Use soy yoghurt for a complete protein source.
2) Fill the bowl with your smoothie base.
3) Start artistically adding your toppings (you can add lots of additional toppings such as banana slices or coconut chips).
Scroll down for some information about your required nutrients and where to get them.
PROTEIN
Soy yoghurt, in my opinion, is the best option to start your day because soy is a complete protein. This means that soy contains all of the essential amino acids which your body cannot make by itself. Your body needs a complete protein throughout the day in order to function properly but not every protein is giving you all you need. A complete protein can be obtained by eating several proteins together (such as beans and peas) whereas Soy is a complete protein so you can eat this at the start of your day and know that your protein source is sorted for the day (and anything else is an extra boost).
CHIA SEEDS
Chia seeds are another source of protein and are packed with antioxidants, high in fiber, iron, and calcium, and they contain Omega-3. All of these nutrients are extremely important for your body, not only for an energy boost but also to potentially help enhance brain and heart health. Chia Seeds are an excellent addition to any diet, let alone a vegetarian or vegan-based diet. I also find them virtually flavorless so adding them to salads, smoothies, and yoghurt is an easy addition to your diet.
VEGAN LIFESTYLE
A plant-based diet isn't the end of the story. Once you embark upon this journey you become more aware of the products use and the companies you support. At The Metta Centre, we have a vast supply of cruelty free and vegan products natural based ingredients. From body care to home fragrancing, we've got you covered. Here are a list of words which you should look out for when hunting out vegan brands:
* Lanolin - made from sheep's wool
* Shellac - obtaied from the Lac Bug (found in food and cosmetics)
* Glycerin - derived from animal fats
* Casein (Sodium Caseinate or Caseinate) - usually from cow's milk
* Squalene - derived from shark liver oil
*Carmine (Cochineal, Natural Red 4, E120, C.I.75470) - derived from bugs
*Collagen - Bovine or Marine
*Keratin - from the horns of animals
*Beeswax (cera alba)
*Silk - from the silk worm
*Hyaluronic Acid - made from rooster combs or bacteria
*Royal Jelly - made by honeybees
There are so many more non-vegan ingredients lurking in your food and cosmetic cupboards. A lot of ingredients are often listed in Latin or by other names (such as E numbers) so be cautious and if unsure, give the product a quick Google search. One of my favourite websites for resources is
